Susie Dai
Professor
Molecular Biology; Materials Chemistry; Environmental Engineering
Susie Dai is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering and the Bond Life Sciences Center at the University of Missouri. Before joining Mizzou, she was a faculty member at Texas A&M University, where she led the Synthetic and Systems Biology Innovation Hub. From 2016 to 2019, she served as Associate Director of the Iowa State Hygienic Laboratory, leading EPA- and state-funded limnology projects monitoring Iowa waterways and directing the CDC-funded Iowa State Biomonitoring Program. Earlier, she worked in the Office of the Texas State Chemist, overseeing FDA- and USDA-supported food and feed safety monitoring programs. Dr. Dai has served as PI or Co-PI on projects funded by the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences, National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, Sun Grant, and industry partners including Chevron and Tito’s Love. Her research integrates molecular biology, materials chemistry, and environmental engineering to address persistent challenges in water and environmental systems. Her lab focuses on: 1) bio-based hybrid materials for PFAS and emerging contaminant remediation, 2) synthetic biology and enzymatic pathways for carbon conversion and pollutant degradation, 3) bioelectrochemical systems for carbon upcycling, and 4) lignin-based sorbents for scalable water treatment.
