Binbin Wang, Ph.D., P.E.

Associate Professor and William Andrew Davidson Professor

Environmental Fluid Dynamics; Hydraulics and Hydrology; Mixing and Transport

Dr. Binbin Wang is an Associate Professor and William Andrew Davidson Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Missouri. He leads the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (MU-EFDL), where his group focuses on bridging fundamental fluid flow processes with their impacts on natural and engineered aquatic environments. His research interests span a broad range of topics in environmental hydraulics, aquatic ecosystems, geophysics, and environmental health. These include measuring and modeling hydrodynamics in rivers and lakes, quantifying methane bubble rise in deep seas, understanding the survival of eggs and larvae of invasive carps, and predicting particle transport related to infectious diseases of wild birds in wetlands. Dr. Wang’s research also integrates artificial intelligence (AI) for predicting environmental flows, quantitative imaging, and instrumentation development. He has led or co-led nearly $4 million in research projects funded by the National Science Foundation, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Naval Research, Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, Missouri Department of Transportation, and private sectors. He was selected for the 2022 Early-Career Research Fellowship of the National Academy of Sciences’ Gulf Research Program. Dr. Wang serves as an Associate Editor of the Coastal Engineering Journal and is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Fluid Dynamics Technical Committee of the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI), the Hydraulic Measurements and Experimental Methods (HMEM) Committee of the Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the leadership team of the Ecohydraulics Committee of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR).
